Park Serve Day - WT*?
Saturday, May 12, 2007
So, I took a great and fun hike at Mt. Tom park today. Saw a group of tents, on the way in, with a sign out front letting me know they were there to help out in the park, and a request to "say hey" if we ran into them on the trail. Sure, I looked forward to it.
Didn't see 'em til on the way back, said hey, and they let me know that today was Park Serve Day. Park Serve Day? I had no idea what that is. They let me know.
Every year, on the second weekend of May, volunteers can go to their local park and help clean/fix it. Repair bridges, clean litter, clear trails, tase bears and reloc...ok, maybe not the last one.
I was very disappointed because 2 people showed up to volunteer. Noone knew about it out this way. 2 people. And 6 contractors. There could have been dozens. Dozens or hundreds. I know I would have gone up to help. What could be better than helping to make the park you hike in a greater place to be? Not much.
Next year, on Park Serve Day, I want to go and give back to a park I hike in. I wrote it down so I could remember. I'm blogging about it so maybe more can know about it next year.
Remember, though, that you can help nature every day.
